The resurrection of Jesus Christ is not just a historical fact, but a life-changing reality. It is one of the most significant events in human history. It is the event that defines Christianity and shapes the worldview of millions of people. In addition, it has had profound implications for both the historical and theological understanding of the world. The resurrection is seen as proof of Jesus’ divinity and the assurance of salvation for believers, as well as a sign of God’s power and love. In this blog post, we will examine how the resurrection of Jesus Christ has impacted both history and theology and why it is still relevant today.

Romans 6:9: "We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him." Romans 8:34: "Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us."

These Bible verses explain that Jesus, after his resurrection, conquered death and is now seated at the right hand of God, interceding for us. It gives hope and assurance to believers that, through Christ’s victory over death, we too can have eternal life. Please read Matthew chapters 27–28 to learn more about the New Testament account of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

The Resurrection as a Historical Event

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the most reliable event in ancient history. Unlike other ancient myths or legends, the resurrection has multiple sources of evidence that confirm its authenticity. These include:

  • The New Testament Gospels: These are the earliest and most detailed accounts of the resurrection. They were written by eyewitnesses or based on eyewitness testimony within a few decades of the event. They provide consistent and coherent narratives of what happened before, during, and after the resurrection.
  • The New Testament Epistles: These are letters written by the apostles and their associates to various churches and individuals. They were written within 20 to 60 years of the resurrection and reflect the belief and experiences of the early Christians. They affirm the reality and significance of the resurrection and its implications for faith and practice.
  • The Extra-Biblical Sources: These are writings by non-Christian authors who mention the resurrection or its effects. They include Josephus, a Jewish historian who wrote about Jesus and his followers; Tacitus, a Roman historian who wrote about the persecution of Christians under Nero; and Pliny the Younger, a Roman governor who wrote about how to deal with Christians. These sources confirm that the resurrection was not a secret or a fabrication, but a public and well-known event that had social and political consequences.

The Resurrection as a Theological Event

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is not just a historical fact, but a theological truth. It is the event that reveals who Jesus is and what he has done for us. Additionally, it is the basis of our faith and hope. It has profound implications for our understanding of God and ourselves. These include:

  • The Divinity of Jesus: The resurrection proves that Jesus is not just a human teacher or prophet, but the Son of God and the Lord of all. It validates his claims to be one with God and to have authority over all things. It shows that he has fulfilled the prophecies and promises of the Old Testament. It demonstrates that he is worthy of our worship and obedience.
  • The Salvation of Believers: The resurrection assures us that Jesus has accomplished our salvation through his death and resurrection. It shows that his death was not a defeat, but a sacrifice that paid for our sins and reconciled us to God. It shows that his resurrection was not an illusion, but a guarantee that we too will be raised from the dead and inherit eternal life. It shows that we are forgiven, justified, sanctified, and glorified in him.
  • The Power and Love of God: The resurrection reveals God’s power and love in action. It shows that God can do what is impossible for humans: to bring life out of death. It shows that God loves us so much that he gave his only Son to die for us and raised him from the dead to give us life. It shows that nothing can separate us from God’s love: not sin, not death, not evil.

The Resurrection as a Relevant Event

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is not just a historical fact or a theological truth, but a relevant reality. It is the event that changes everything for us today. It gives us meaning, purpose, and hope in this life and beyond. Moreover, it challenges us to live differently in light of what God has done for us in Christ. It invites us to respond with faith, repentance, and obedience to God’s call.

Some practical ways that we can apply the resurrection to our lives today are:

  • To celebrate it: We can join with other Christians in worshiping God for his amazing grace and power in raising Jesus from the dead. We can also share the good news of the resurrection with others who need to hear it.
  • To imitate it: We can follow Jesus‘ example of dying to ourselves and living for God. We can put to death our sinful desires and habits and put on our new identity in Christ. We can seek God’s will and glory in everything we do.
  • To anticipate it: We can look forward to our own resurrection when Jesus returns. We can live with hope and joy knowing that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us (Romans 8:18). We can also care for God’s creation knowing that it too will be restored when Jesus comes again.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ provides hope for believers that death is not the end in that it demonstrates God’s power over death and offers the promise of eternal life for those who believe in Him. This belief is a cornerstone of the Christian faith and provides comfort and peace to those who have lost loved ones. Jesus conquered death and opened the way for believers to have eternal life with God.
